Ian L. Meakin is a barrister in full-time practice and of counsel of the law firm. He also is a tenant at XXIV Old Buildings, Geneva and London. Mr Meakin enjoys a longstanding and broad professional experience in dispute settlement, international commercial law, law of trusts and succession law. Law firms and legal practitioners frequently call on Mr Meakin for assistance in the field of international dispute settlement. Mr Meakin works in both English and French. Before joining our law firm, Mr Meakin had worked in two other Geneva-based Swiss law firms for seven years.
Dispute settlement: Mr Meakin practices all forms of international arbitration, as President of the Tribunal, as a sole arbitrator, as co-arbitrator nominated by one party or the relevant court or chamber, and as counsel. His experience includes institutional (ICC, LCIA, CCIG, Zurich IAR, GAFTA, Refined Sugar Association, LMAA, SCC, etc.) as well as ad hoc arbitration (such as UNCITRAL). Mr Meakin has participated in arbitrations in Geneva, Zurich, London and Paris. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb) and the Swiss Arbitration Association. Mr Meakin is specialized in commodities, construction law, energy law, international joint ventures, commercial contracts, pharmaceutical research and development contracts, international sale of goods, shipping and maritime law, and sports law. He has experience in the strategic co-ordination of large international litigation matters involving debt collection following commercial fraud, including assistance in the obtaining and the execution of search and seizure orders, disclosure orders against banks and third parties, as well as asset location and freezing.
International commercial law: Mr Meakin has considerable experience in negotiating and drafting international commercial contracts (construction, international sale of goods, trade financing, including trade credits for contracts of sales of commodities). As an ad hoc lecturer at the University of Geneva, he taught for ten years international commercial law (Master of Business Law). He also taught legal drafting on the Master of International Dispute Settlement at the Graduate Institute of Geneva. Mr Meakin regularly drafts legal opinions on a broad range of topics in English commercial law. Moreover, he creates international business structures, including on- and offshore entities devoted to commercial and industrial purposes and to asset protection.
Trusts and succession law: Mr Meakin is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioner (STEP). He regularly advises represents his clients on trusts (contentious and non-contentious) and wills. Mr Meakin also provides advice on questions of domicile, particularly from a private international law perspective.
